But Still In Danger of Execution

Mumia Abu Jamal was to be murdered by the State on Aug 17.1995. Ten days before his death was postponed indefinitely. The Judge, Albert Sabo, had never before granted a stay in the 32 deaths he has handed out in Philadelphia. Sabo had presided at Jamal's 1981 trial for allegedly killing Philly cop Daniel Faulkner. Sabo issued a 154 page ruling rejecting each of Jamal's claims that he was framed. Philly cops have recently been exposed and convicted in a series of trial revealing corruption, brutality and perjury. Protests around the US and across the world helped get the stay of execution: Pennsylvania Supreme Court received 100,000 letters dem-anding that Judge Sabo be removed.

Jamal continues to "sojourn in hell" on death row in a 8 by 10 foot cell containing a cot, a sink and a toilet. "It's like living in your bathroom all day and all night long!" he says.

The Philadelphia chapter of the racist Fraternal Order of Police held their own rallies to demand Jamal's execution. 300 armed off duty cops on July 19 picketed a fund-raiser for Jamal chanting "four more weeks".. Driven to a frenzy by the temporary stay of execution, several thousand cops gathered on Sept 16 in Philadelphia's Independence Square and chanted "Burn, Baby. Burn." in reference to Mumia's death in the electric chair. Any one supporting Jamal is also subject to a police boycott and Sen. Bob Dole on behalf of the cops pressured National Public Radio to cancel Mumia's death row radio commentaries.
